Preparation Guide for Your Spray Tan
Achieving the perfect spray tan is a combination of expert application and proper preparation. At Tina Tans, we provide a seamless mobile spray tanning experience tailored to your skin tone, but your role in pre-tan preparation plays an equally vital part. This guide will help you maximise the results of your spray tan, ensuring it looks flawless, natural, and lasts as long as possible.
01.
Exfoliate Your Skin (24 Hours Before)
Exfoliation is key to removing dead skin cells and creating a smooth base for your tan. Use an exfoliating mitt or a gentle scrub, focusing on areas prone to dryness like:
- Elbows
- Knees
- Ankles
- Hands
- Feet
Avoid harsh scrubs with oils, as they can leave a residue that might block the tanning solution. If you’re not sure which exfoliator to use, choose an oil-free formula for the best results.
02.
Remove Unwanted Hair (24–48 Hours Before)
Shaving or waxing should be done at least 24 hours before your spray tan appointment to allow your skin time to recover. Freshly shaved or waxed skin can be sensitive, and tanning on irritated skin may lead to uneven results.
- Shaving: Use a new razor to avoid cuts or irritation.
- Waxing: Ensure no wax residue remains on your skin after the session.
03.
Avoid Lotions, Deodorants, and Makeup
On the day of your tan, your skin should be clean and free from:
- Moisturisers
- Oils
- Deodorants
- Perfume
- Makeup
These products can create barriers, leading to patchy areas or reduced absorption of the tanning solution. If you require moisturiser prior to your tan, limit its use to the night before and ensure your skin is completely free from it on the day of your appointment.
04.
Wear Loose, Dark Clothing
After your spray tan, the tanning solution will need time to develop. Tight clothing or fabrics that rub against your skin can disturb the application, causing uneven results. Choose:
- Loose-fitting tops and trousers
- Dark colours to avoid visible staining
- Flip-flops or loose footwear
Avoid wearing jeans, bras, or leggings immediately after your session, as these can leave marks on your tan.
05.
Prep Your Home for a Mobile Tanning Session
Since Tina Tans is a mobile spray tanning service, we bring everything to you for a convenient, stress-free experience. To prepare your home:
- Choose a well-ventilated area for the tanning session.
- Clear a small space where our tanning tent can be set up.
- Ensure adequate lighting so our technician can apply the tan evenly.
- Keep pets and small children away during the session for safety and to avoid interruptions.
06.
Discuss Your Desired Tan Shade
Before your session, think about the look you’d like to achieve. Whether you want a light sun-kissed glow or a deep bronzed tan, our technician will tailor the shade to suit your skin tone and preferences.
We’ll conduct a quick consultation before application to understand your goals and ensure the result is perfect for your occasion.

After Your Spray Tan: Immediate Care
Once your tan is applied, it’s important to follow these aftercare tips to ensure optimal results:
1. Avoid Water and Sweating
Stay away from water, sweat, and rain for at least 8 hours after your tan. This allows the solution to develop fully without streaking or washing away prematurely.
2. Don’t Touch Your Skin
Avoid touching your skin immediately after the session, as this can transfer the solution to your hands and create uneven areas.
3. Wait Before Showering
The first shower should be with lukewarm water only, avoiding soaps, scrubs, or shampoos. This rinse will remove the guide colour while allowing the tan to continue developing underneath.
4. Perfume Usage
Never spray perfume directly onto skin as this can cause patchiness. Mist onto clothes or hair instead.
5. Shower products
Use mild shower products such as Sanex, Simple or Baby shower gel, avoid any citrus ingredients or overly moisturising gels such as Dove. Vaseline Intensive Care Body Lotion green or yellow bottle is a great tan friendly moisturiser.
Long-Term Aftercare: Maintaining Your Tan
1. Moisturise Daily
Hydration is crucial for maintaining an even tan. Use a moisturiser that’s free from oils and parabens to keep your skin soft and prolong your glow.
2. Avoid Exfoliation
Avoid exfoliating your skin until you’re ready for the tan to fade naturally. Harsh scrubs or loofahs can cause the tan to peel unevenly.
3. Stay Away from Chlorine and Saltwater
Pools, hot tubs, and saltwater can accelerate the fading process, as chlorine and salt can break down the tanning solution.
4. Pat Dry After Showering
After showering, gently pat your skin dry with a towel rather than rubbing it, which can cause uneven fading.
